Susy Young

Head of Research Operations

As the Head of Research Operations at the Institute of Occupational Medicine (IOM) in Edinburgh, Susy Young brings a wealth of experience and a multifaceted approach to her role. Susy is dedicated to supporting the Science Insights and Innovation (SII) Group, ensuring that both internal and external stakeholders have the tools and information they need to work with maximum efficiency and ease. Her support enables Project Leaders to excel in the development and implementation of scientific research.
Leading a diverse team from various scientific backgrounds, Susy focuses on work planning, regular check-ins, objective setting, guidance, problem-solving, and providing advice. She leverages separate mentors to provide detailed scientific work guidance, ensuring a collaborative and well-rounded support system.
Susy’s operational oversight encompasses the entire SII Group’s support needs, financial performance, and overall operations. She initially joined IOM almost 20 years ago to develop and refine procedures and systems (Research Guidance Procedures) aligned with the Joint Code of Practice for Research. These systems have evolved into a robust management suite that continues to streamline processes at IOM.
She regularly meets with Project Leaders to ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget. Her coordination extends to the Finance department, where she manages contract reviews and invoicing.
Drawing from her background as a Senior Quality Assurance Auditor, Susy ensures compliance with the Joint Code of Practice and other guidelines. She leverages the CRM and information management tool at IOM to develop bespoke pages that centralise crucial information for Project Leaders, continuously refining forms and reports to maximise efficiency. Susy regularly initiates and improves processes and develops guidance on various topics to support Project Leaders. One of her key projects is the Knowledge Hub, which consolidates over 50 years of IOM’s reports, publications, articles, and books into a central, easily accessible location. In addition to her internal responsibilities, Susy has administratively managed several EC projects, ensuring they are delivered on time and within budget.
