Dr Sean Semple’s visit to Malawi
As part of the Pan African Thoracic Society Methods in Epidemiologic Clinical and Operations Research (PATS MECOR) course Sean organised a workshop to teach African researchers about methods of measuring exposure to Household Air Pollution. Smoke from cooking with wood and charcoal is one of the major causes of premature death and poor respiratory health in sub-Saharan Africa producing a global health burden equivalent to Malaria. Sean also travelled to Chikwawa in southern Malawi to visit a village where he carried out research in 2008 and to learn about recent progress on the Cooking and Pneumonia Study (CAPS) being carried out by colleagues at the University of Liverpool.
