The driving force, smoking in cars

With assistance from scientists at the Scottish Centre for Indoor Air Research, IOM was involved in the largest study to measure second-hand tobacco smoke concentrations in cars during real-life journeys. The results of the study identified that concentrations of fine particulate matter were on average about 10 times higher than health-based limits.

The impact of the study was shared at a national conference of tobacco control specialists and formed part of a “Smoke-free cars” media campaign, which generated substantial media interest with the results cited across a variety of major radio and newspaper outlets. The study also contributed to the Scottish Government’s ambitions to create a tobacco-free generation by 2034.
