An attempt was made to investigate the in vitro model for the production of a macrophage-derived fibrogenic factor, previously described by H EPPLESTON and S TYLES , Nature214 , 521–522 (1967). The present study, which used both the techniques described originally and also a number of variations to these techniques, failed to demonstrate any such factor
