Pneumoconiosis Field Research: Summary report on environmental conditions at Lady Victoria Colliery 1975-1981
This report summarises the environmental measurements made at Lady Victoria Colliery during the third phase of the Pneumoconiosis Field Research and covers the period from January 1975 to March 1981.A brief description is given of the Colliery, the seams worked, mining methods and the techniques used for the environmental sampling. The dust concentrations, which are in gravimetric units, are tabulated and discussed in relation to the mining activities. Both respirable and total dust concentrations are given for all occupational groups. The composition of the respirable dust is also presented. Sampling for nitrous fume was carried out from May 1976 to December 1978, The results obtained are tabulated and discussed. The level of radioactivity due to radon and thoron has also been measured.Throughout the review period Lady Victoria Colliery had a coalface (all shifts) mean respirable dust concentration of 2.5 mg/m3. The ash content of the respirable dust was 45.2 per cent, and the mean quartz in sample was 11.2 per cent (concentration 0.28 mg/m3). Some high local concentrations of quartz were experienced. “”
