The ergonomic principles of colliery control room design and layout
This report was first published as an Appendix to the Final Report on CEC Contract 7245/13/8/069 “”Control Room Operations : An Investigation of the Task of the Operator in a Colliery Control Room”” published by the Institute of Occupational Medicine as report number TM/82/8. The final report is a substantial document and it was considered by IOM, and both Headquarters Mining Department and MRDE, that the Principles section would be potentially valuable to those people involved in control room design though they would probably not require the full report. The principles covered in this report are derived from a examination of ergonomic aspects of some existing colliery control rooms (as detailed in the Final Report). It should, however, be emphazised that the authors are not in a position to be able to take full account of mining, engineering or other requirements. It is, therefore recognised that it may not always be practicable to implement the ergonomic recommendations in full.If any further information is required, or if the Branch can be of wider assistance, please do not hesitate to contact the Head of Branch. “”
