Pneumoconiosis Field Research: Environmental conditions at South Kirkby Colliery, 1975/76

This report tabulates respirable dust concentrations and comments on the composition of the dust at South Kirkby Colliery for the period April 1975 to March 1976. Information is given on methods of working, output and manpower.The colliery had a coalface mean respirable dust concentration of 3. 4mg/m3, compared with 3.6mg/m3 in the previous year. The mean ash content of the respirable dust was 54. 8 per cent and the mean quartz content 7.2 per cent (concentration 0. 25 mg/m3).’Total’ dust concentrations are tabulated and were on average 11 times as high as the respirable dust concentrations for face sites.
