Safety data sheet preparation
Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) in the standard 16 section format are a well-accepted and effective method for the communication of workplace health and safety information to users of chemical substances and mixtures.
SDSs form an integral part of the EU REACH Regulation and must be provided to customers where the:
- substance or mixture meets the criteria for classification as hazardous according to the Classification, Labelling and Packaging (CLP) Regulation, or;
- substance is persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic (PBT) or very persistent and very bioaccumulative (vPvB), or;
- substance is included in the candidate list for eventual authorisation.
Even in situations where these specific criteria are not met, the provision of an SDS to downstream users is recommended as a measure of good practice to ensure safe handling, use and disposal.
Where a chemical safety assessment has been carried out for a substance under REACH, relevant exposure scenarios describing how the substance can be safely handled to control exposures should be included as an annex to the SDS forming an Extended Safety Data Sheet (e-SDS).
