#IOM50

IOM-In-The-News

IOM has once again been recognised as a Collaborating Centre for Occupational Health by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Institutions are designated as WHO collaborating centres (CCs) under a formal mechanism of collaboration to carry out activities in support of the WHO’s programme at all levels. As of 2017, WHO’s network of WHO CCs brings together more than 800 highly regarded academic and scientific institutions in over 80 countries, supporting WHO programmes and priorities with time, expertise and funding.

IOM’s designation has been retained since its previous award in 2015.  IOM joins the likes of the University of Oxford, University of Edinburgh, Public Health England and the University of St Andrews as collaborating centres in the UK.

The areas of collaboration to be covered include activities around occupational and environmental health aiming to:

  • Reduce stress and psychosocial risks and improve mental health at work
  • Assess exposure of outdoor workers to environmental hazards under climate change

Speaking after the award IOM Head of Research, Dr Sotiris Vardoulakis said, “We are delighted with our continuing relationship and recognition as a World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre.  It is a testament to the hard work of our team here at IOM and the impact and wider global influence our scientific findings are having.”
